Retail vs. Commercial vs. Art in Photography

Image of private dining area at Lounge on 20, Sacramento, CA

This is an example of commercial photography- This image can be utilized as a marketing vehicle for not just the restaurant, but the design and construction firms portfolio and job proposals.

The photography industry is so vast; cameras are a part of almost everyone’s daily life. For example, iPhones, security, and auto back up cameras just name a few places that we show our love for the lens. We as society are so in bed with photography we don’t even recognize it. The great thing is I think everyone can be a photographer. So where does that leave the consumption of photography? And why does this matter? It matters because it helps suppliers and consumers of photography services understand the value $$ of the goods and services in the photography market. 1st ground rule just because someone is a professional photographer does not mean they are wedding photographer. Ok, now that’s out of the way we can continue. So if you’re a consumer of photography, what are you buying and what’s the photographs final destination? You answer that question, and you know exactly where you stand as a consumer of photography. If the image(s) you buy are valuable to only you or a small group of people that hired a photographer, like a wedding, that is called retail photography. If the image(s) you buy are used/viewed by many in order to say further your business for marketing that is called commercial photography. And if you buy an image for you or a small group of people to admire on a wall than it is art photography. If you understand and respect the differences in these sub-industries, you are well on the way to being an educated photography buyer. Wikipedia almost has “commercial photography” correct….. http://bit.ly/KhecJA

Front Cover of Chip Allen's Architectural Photography 2011 Book

This year marks the first year in that an interior has made the cover of the drop book! See other photos from the cover photo shoot here: http://bit.ly/I5sQHb

The Girl Scouts have their cookies, I have my drop book! Every year since the doors at Chip Allen Architectural Photography have been open, I’ve produced the “best of” drop book. The book is a 30-page soft cover book that highlights the best. Projects I’ve been privileged to work on from the past year. This year’s book is being printed and shipped this month to all clients with a project featured in the book. It is full of significant architectural achievements from 2011, including hospitality, civic, healthcare, education and restoration. The book’s purpose is two fold, it is used as a “hard to toss out” brochure for my services, but also a marketing vehicle, or brag book for my clients. I want my clients/perspective clients to see what each other are doing. Thus to make the architectural industry a wonderful place to spend ones pursuits. If you are a client of CA Photography, chances are you will be receiving the book in late April. If you are not a client and would like to request a complimentary book please email or call me (see contact info).
